The Rookie Universe Is Expanding Again — And This Time, a New Hero Takes the Badge
The The Rookie franchise is getting bigger once again, and its next chapter is taking viewers to an entirely new corner of the country.
Back in December 2024, reports confirmed that ABC, Lionsgate Television, and 20th Television were developing a brand-new spinoff titled The Rookie: North. The project comes from original series creator Alexi Hawley, who is returning to write and executive produce the latest addition to the growing universe.
What Is The Rookie: North About?
Set in Washington State, The Rookie: North introduces audiences to Alex Holland, a police officer entering a fresh stage of life. Unlike many midlife protagonists, Alex never believed he was destined for a dramatic crisis — but that may be about to change.
Much like the original The Rookie, which was inspired by real-life LAPD officer Bill Norcross, the new series will explore the challenges of starting over while balancing personal struggles, career ambitions, and life-changing decisions.
Who’s Joining the Cast?
Leading the new series is Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, alongside an impressive ensemble that includes Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson.
Speaking about the project, Ellis praised both the cast and the unique setting of the show. According to him, Tacoma offers a backdrop unlike anything seen in the franchise before. From bustling city streets and waterfront communities to mountains and the Pacific coastline, the series will have an expansive and visually stunning world to explore.

Will Nathan Fillion Return?
Fans of the original series have another reason to get excited. Both Ellis and Montgomery have confirmed that Nathan Fillion will appear in the pilot episode as Officer John Nolan.
Montgomery revealed that Nolan’s strongest connection in the new series will be with Alex Holland. While the two characters are very different, she described them as sharing a similar spirit and suggested they would likely become close friends if they existed outside the television universe.
Ellis also hinted that Nolan could serve as a mentor figure, saying Alex may frequently turn to him for guidance as he navigates the challenges ahead.
The Franchise Gets Another Chance
The Rookie: North marks the franchise’s second attempt at expanding beyond the flagship series. The first spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, premiered in 2022 but was canceled after only one season.
This time, however, ABC appears determined to build a stronger future for the franchise. With a new setting, a fresh lead character, and Nathan Fillion helping launch the story, The Rookie: North could become the next major chapter in one of television’s most successful police drama universes.
