Why The Blacklist Had No Choice But to End After Season 10, According to James Spader
After ten seasons, more than 200 episodes, and countless unforgettable Raymond Reddington moments, The Blacklist officially came to an end in 2023. While many fans hoped the hit NBC crime drama could continue, star and executive producer James Spader believes Season 10 was the perfect place to stop.
According to Spader, extending the series beyond its tenth season would have fundamentally changed what made The Blacklist special in the first place.
“I think if the show went beyond this year, it would turn into a very different show,” Spader explained. Over the years, the series became known for its unpredictable storytelling, constantly shifting tone, and ability to reinvent itself. But Spader felt that pushing the story much further risked turning it into something even longtime fans might no longer recognize.

Since its debut in 2013, The Blacklist followed the mysterious Raymond Reddington as he helped the FBI capture some of the world’s most dangerous criminals while hiding secrets of his own. The final season brought the journey full circle, celebrating the show’s 200th Blacklister while forcing Red to confront enemies from his past who were determined to settle old scores.
For Spader, ending the series wasn’t about running out of stories—it was about preserving the identity of a show that had already achieved something rare: staying compelling for an entire decade.

After ten years on the air, The Blacklist didn’t simply end. It chose the right moment to say goodbye.
