The Rookie Universe Expands as ABC Officially Orders The Rookie: North

Fans of The Rookie have a new reason to celebrate. ABC has officially given a series order to The Rookie: North, the latest expansion of the hit police drama franchise.

The new series will introduce viewers to a fresh lead character while maintaining the heart, action, and emotional storytelling that made The Rookie a fan favorite.

A New Rookie Takes Center Stage

The series stars Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a man who never thought a midlife crisis was in the cards for him. However, after surviving a violent home invasion, Alex discovers a renewed sense of purpose and makes a life-changing decision: joining the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie officer.

Working across a vast and unpredictable region that stretches from urban coastal communities to remote forest areas, Alex must prove himself to skeptical colleagues, demanding supervisors, and perhaps most importantly, to himself.

From Pilot to Full Series

ABC first announced the project’s development in 2024 before officially ordering a pilot later that year. Following strong internal support, the network has now moved forward with a full series order ahead of Disney’s annual Upfront presentation.

The decision signals ABC’s continued confidence in the franchise, which remains one of the network’s most successful drama properties.

The Franchise Continues to Grow

The Rookie: North becomes the second official spinoff of The Rookie.

The franchise previously expanded with The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts. While that series lasted only one season before being canceled in 2023, ABC appears optimistic that The Rookie: North can build on the success of the original show.

Meanwhile, The Rookie itself remains stronger than ever, having recently wrapped its eighth season and already secured a renewal for Season 9.

Familiar Faces Behind the Scenes

Series creator Alexi Hawley returns to lead the project, serving as writer, executive producer, and director of the pilot episode.

Original series star Nathan Fillion also joins the executive producing team alongside Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross, and Michelle Chapman. Lionsgate Television and 20th Television will produce the series.
